Good adventure stories but the characters are a bit shallow。 It will let your imagination run wild though。

This book has a feel similar to Moby Dick with a fatalistic captain。 The descriptions of the animal life and the different scenes and experiences undersee is interesting, as well as the workings of the submarine。 It is never made clear why Captain Nemo has eschewed society, or indeed whatever happens to him in the end。 I originally thought that the title meant that the characters would be 20,000 feet below sea-level, when in fact it's that they have travelled 20,000 leagues together in a submari This book has a feel similar to Moby Dick with a fatalistic captain。 The descriptions of the animal life and the different scenes and experiences undersee is interesting, as well as the workings of the submarine。 It is never made clear why Captain Nemo has eschewed society, or indeed whatever happens to him in the end。 I originally thought that the title meant that the characters would be 20,000 feet below sea-level, when in fact it's that they have travelled 20,000 leagues together in a submarine vessel。 Just in case anyone else also has an incorrect assumption about that。I liked the book and likely would enjoy it more in a better mind-set for this type of story。 I ended up speeding up the reading because I thought it was paced a bit slowly。 。。。more

Definitely a long read (even though I listened to it as an audiobook)。 However, there is enough action mixed in with the lengthy descriptions。 Better than I thought it'd be! So well written, so intelligently designed from start to finish in terms of the construction of the characters, the character arcs and the immense imagination and creativity of the story。 I really enjoyed getting to experience the story as an adult having really appreciated a children’s adaptation of it in elementary school。 The audiobook recording was really a neat way to experience the original story that this author created。 I definitely want to read more by this author soon! While the author So well written, so intelligently designed from start to finish in terms of the construction of the characters, the character arcs and the immense imagination and creativity of the story。 I really enjoyed getting to experience the story as an adult having really appreciated a children’s adaptation of it in elementary school。 The audiobook recording was really a neat way to experience the original story that this author created。 I definitely want to read more by this author soon! While the author does get a bit wordy at times and it is an adjustment to hear the way the story is told (considering the vernacular of the era it was written) the plots, the intrigue and the creativity are still as gripping and enjoyable today as they were the day it was written。 。。。more

This book had a few qualities that kept me reading it despite the fact that half of it is written in 19th century scientific jargon。 Mainly this is due to the fact that Verne wrote his three main characters as if they’re in a gay poly relationship, which is honestly why I kept reading it。 Besides that, obviously this book is really impressive from a cultural standpoint, and if you like Hugo you’ll like Verne because it’s obvious how much inspiration he takes from him。 But honestly, the book is p This book had a few qualities that kept me reading it despite the fact that half of it is written in 19th century scientific jargon。 Mainly this is due to the fact that Verne wrote his three main characters as if they’re in a gay poly relationship, which is honestly why I kept reading it。 Besides that, obviously this book is really impressive from a cultural standpoint, and if you like Hugo you’ll like Verne because it’s obvious how much inspiration he takes from him。 But honestly, the book is pretty boring, and I’m pretty sure Verne made up half the marine creatures in it because Google could not help me on those 2 and a half page rants about the beauties of the ocean。 Anyway maybe if I was a marine biologist I would enjoy this more, but alas, I am a fine arts major。 Pretty gay tho, so it has that going for it。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 20000 Leagues is one of the more famous and highly regarded Verne books, which surprises me somewhat as there is no doubt that, as a story, it is inferior to Around the World in 80 Days or Journey to the Centre of the Earth。 Both of those were science fiction stories which were content to let the science take second place to the story when necessary。 20000 Leagues under the Sea is Verne showing you all the homework he’s done about fish。Take the character of Conseil, for example。 He’s the assista 20000 Leagues is one of the more famous and highly regarded Verne books, which surprises me somewhat as there is no doubt that, as a story, it is inferior to Around the World in 80 Days or Journey to the Centre of the Earth。 Both of those were science fiction stories which were content to let the science take second place to the story when necessary。 20000 Leagues under the Sea is Verne showing you all the homework he’s done about fish。Take the character of Conseil, for example。 He’s the assistant of the main character, but his purpose in the novel is, quite literally, to spout off the Linnaean taxonomic classification of any animal they encounter in order to…what? Educate us? The narrator takes care to note that Conseil has no idea what these animals whose classifications he has memorised actually look like。 When faced with a new fish, it falls to the professor to give it its common name so that Conseil will know what it is before giving us its stats。80 Days also had a manservant to the main character in the form of Passpartout, who was there for Fogg to exposit to about the places they were visiting。 However, Passpartout was also there to get into comedically odd misadventures in order to slow down the pace of travel and build suspense as to whether they will make it in time。 Conseil is just there to remind us what “Kids Prefer Cheese Over Fried Green Spinach” is meant to refer to!When Verne gets away from 3 page descriptions of fish, or pages of invective about the plight of Indian pearl divers, or (admittedly awesome) descriptions of the Nautilus’ capabilities, or lists of every South Polar expedition to that point and precisely how far south they made it by latitude (not a joke); when, in other words, he starts to tell a story, it is really good。 Really good。 The dark history of Captain Nemo, the initial battle with the mysterious Narwhal, the pathos of being trapped under thousands of feet of ice under a south polar ice shelf, battles with giant squid, the encounters with Papuan tribesmen。 These things are described with all of Verne’s characteristic style and verve, and the pages fly by。 Then, it’s time for the characters to look out of the submarine’s window and list all the fish they can see again。 For chapters at a time。So, overall, a very uneven book。 Worth the read, but only so you can say you’ve done it! 。。。more

The novel follows three castaways that are rescued by a misterious captain and board his submarine, the catch is, once they board they may never leave。 This gives us many adventures from one corner of the seas to the other。 At times it felt that the book was too long, things didn't seem connected enough or intentional enough, but overall it gives us really interesting adventures。The character development was lacking。 The novel follows three castaways that are rescued by a misterious captain and board his submarine, the catch is, once they board they may never leave。 This gives us many adventures from one corner of the seas to the other。 At times it felt that the book was too long, things didn't seem connected enough or intentional enough, but overall it gives us really interesting adventures。The character development was lacking。 。。。more

I think I have a problem with classics, which is that I tend to build them up in my mind and romanticize them for years before actually reading them。 As Jules Verne is one of the pioneers of science fiction, one of my favorite genres, I always thought that I would love his works。 Then I read All the Light we Cannot See, in which the main character raves about 20,000 Leagues through the entire book, so I decided it was finally time to give it a shot。 Of course I knew his stories would feel dated I think I have a problem with classics, which is that I tend to build them up in my mind and romanticize them for years before actually reading them。 As Jules Verne is one of the pioneers of science fiction, one of my favorite genres, I always thought that I would love his works。 Then I read All the Light we Cannot See, in which the main character raves about 20,000 Leagues through the entire book, so I decided it was finally time to give it a shot。 Of course I knew his stories would feel dated but it's a fascination of mine to get into the heads of people who existed a century or more before I was born。 Verne imagining the wonders of the world through the lens of someone from his time is what I found interesting about this book。 What I did NOT find interesting was everything else。Good lord。 This book should have been called "How to Meticulously Catalogue, Hunt and Prepare Every Damned Plant and Animal Under the Sea。" If you took away the endless scenes of Aronnax describing every living thing he sees in endless detail you might cut the book in half。 There is very little actual story here。 There are definitely a few scenes that will stick in my memory (the underwater funeral was really interesting), but for the most part I was battling to keep my eyes from glazing over。 Captain Nero himself was fairly interesting and I might have been more invested in this if the story spent more time on his past and how he constructed his Nautilus, rather than him just being infinitely rich and knowledgeable and powerful like a freaking wizard。 Ned was a pretty fun character though。 I would have taken a story from his POV as well。 Basically Aronnax is boring AF as a main character。So, if you're going to read this, just know that it isn't about battling a giant squid (that takes up a minute fraction) or any one thing really。 It's just。。。 travelling around in a sub and being amazed by everything for several hundred pages。 I'm glad I read it。 Verne's prose is very readable and it's fun to see science fiction from a world where it has hardly existed yet。 To me it was just。。。 boring。 。。。more
